I'm not sure if I've mentioned this or not, but when I was a kid, my mom worked for an interior designer. She sewed all kinds of commissioned stuff... Roman shades, bolsters, bedspreads, stuff like that.
I didn't help out much, but I did learn how to string up a shade with cord and some eye hooks. What I've done in two of the girls' rooms is much simpler than anything my mom ever did and it certainly doesn't hang as nice as her creations, but it's functional and simple and, most importantly, I like it.
Also, if you're interested, there's more info about the embroidery and design here.

YAY!!!
Thanks so much!!
2 Summers ago I decided I wanted to make roman shades for my east-facing kitchen windows.
Right now there are only lace valences on those windows (4 windows which "bow" outwards).
Originally I had planned to do blinds, but I wanted color, not just white or ivory and all the stores around me stopped carrying them. Hence the roman blind plan.
But any time I started I was so daunted by the project that I never got very far.
I may actually get to make these. They seem a bit friendlier than roman blinds to someone with limited time and crafting space!
I'll let you know and post photos if/when it happens.
Thanks again Wendy!!!
Renee, I can't wait to see them. Roman shades do require a lot more precision than these do (and a ton of sewing on of little plastic rings). Good luck!
And let me know if you have any questions about the tutorial. I'd be surprised if I didn't leave something out. ;)
I looked at many, many sites looking for these directions. Yours are perfect. Thanks!
Because links to profiles don't transfer well to Wordpress, I'm linking to this now.
